If you want more color, +Yonatan Zunger has said many of the things I would say if I were authorized to make public statements. Since I'm not and he is, I'm resharing what he said.

I have a tremendous number of thoughts about the various revelations about the NSA's domestic espionage programs revealed this week. But first and foremost, I wanted to share this message from +Larry Page and our Chief Legal Officer +David Drummond. Google had no involvement in the PRISM program and the first we heard of it was when Greenwald's article hit the press.

I'm not sure what the details of this PRISM program are, but I can tell you that the only way in which Google reveals information about users are when we receive lawful, specific orders about individuals -- things like search warrants. And we continue to stand firm against any attempts to do so broadly or without genuine, individualized suspicion, and publicize the results as much as possible in our Transparency Report. Having seen much of the internals of how we do this, I can tell you that it is a point of pride, both for the company and for many of us, personally, that we stand up to governments that demand people's information.

I can also tell you that the suggestion that PRISM involved anything happening directly inside our datacenters surprised me a great deal; owing to the nature of my work at Google over the past decade, it would have been challenging -- not impossible, but definitely a major surprise -- if something like this could have been done without my ever hearing of it. And I can categorically state that nothing resembling the mass surveillance of individuals by governments within our systems has ever crossed my plate.

If it had, even if I couldn't talk about it, in all likelihood I would no longer be working at Google: the fact that we do stand up for individual users' privacy and protection, for their right to have a personal life which is not ever shared with other people without their consent, even when governments come knocking at our door with guns, is one of the two most important reasons that I am at this company: the other being a chance to build systems which fundamentally change and improve the lives of billions of people by turning the abstract power of computing into something which amplifies and expands their individual, mental life.

Whatever the NSA was doing involving the mass harvesting of information, it did not involve being on the inside of Google. And I, personally, am by now disgusted with their conduct: the national security apparatus has convinced itself and the rest of the government that the only way it can do its job is to know everything about everyone. That's not how you protect a country. We didn't fight the Cold War just so we could rebuild the Stasi ourselves.

I find myself deeply disbelieving in PRISM's existence. Complete categorical denial from everyone involved is actually pretty convincing.

Compare to the Verizon thing, where the government said "Well, yes we're doing that, but it's ok."

While I'm making posts about my employer, +1 to +Amber Yust's sentiment.

I am frankly embarrassed that my employer chose to be associated with this movie, and simultaneously glad that the reality of the company I work for is so far away from the impression one might take away from the film.

For those actually interested in knowing more about the real Google and its internship program (which isn't just for engineers!), check out this article:

As a documentary it was terrible (the women/men ratio was unrealistic (high), everyone is an archetype, and none of it would ever happen for so.many.reasons)... as an R-rated what-fools-these-mortals-be formula comedy it was ok.

Pizza version 6.0:
Fluffier, more moist crust thanks to more whey than usual and a longer rise time. Less stingy with the dough amount in general for a thicker crust.

Toppings: grilled sausage leftover from Memorial Day cookout, onion, mushroom, fresh tomato, canned tomato sauce.
Absent: cheese. I ate all the mozzarella before using up the whey from that batch, so a temporary moratorium upon cheesemaking is in effect until I can finish off this batch of whey.

That is true of active dry yeast, too. You can e.g. mix it in to the flour before adding water.

And yeah, holy salt Batman. That's about 3x as much as I'd expect, plus the "whey" of mozzarella is aka brine and is usually pretty salty. Of course, it's also about 3x as much yeast as I'd expect, which makes sense - salt slows down yeast. I like the idea of using the mozzarella brine as the liquid in the dough. Have to try that some time.

I usually make something along these lines: http://smittenkitchen.com/blog/2007/01/pizza-and-the-limits-of-diy/

Though really, usually +Maria Mrowicki makes it.

Explicit denial of the 'drop box' theory as well.

From +David Drummond, Chief Legal Officer: We cannot say this more clearly—the government does not have access to Google servers—not directly, or via a back door, or a so-called drop box. Nor have we received blanket orders of the kind being discussed in the media. It is quite wrong to insinuate otherwise. We provide user data to governments only in accordance with the law. Our legal team reviews each and every request, and frequently pushes back when requests are overly broad or don’t follow the correct process. And we have taken the lead in being as transparent as possible about government requests for user information.

Have you guys seen Rick Falkvinge's article about what he thinks is going on with Prism?

http://falkvinge.net/2013/06/08/so-just-exactly-what-is-nsas-prism-more-than-reprehensibly-evil/

He suspects that it is just a set of filters on the already well known choke points that the NSA wiretaps from.  This would mean that they could get a fairly large amount of data, fairly easily, in real time, without the consent of the providers.

Why I am happy with the denial:
1.) Made on the record, by specific executives that would have to have known if there were a collection scheme of the alleged form.
2.) The government can compel you to be silent about an issue, but cannot compel you to lie on their behalf to falsely deny claims.
3.) I trust the executives at Google to be strong enough believers in civil liberty to not voluntarily lie to cover up what would be a serious government intrusion into privacy.

That being said, it was fun for a few hours pie in the sky speculating on very far-fetched ways that the NSA could hypothetically pwn Google and attempt to keep it secret from its employees at large given infinite resources and rating their plausibility. Reflections on Trusting Trust (http://cm.bell-labs.com/who/ken/trust.html) figured heavily into what I could come up with.

+Watson Ladd - that's a very different thing that whatever this has been characterized as.  Mostly likely, this is the front-end to how the feds request information (through the legal channels).

It most likely isn't wholesale snarfing up of data, because that would take some pretty monstrous datacenters and pipes.

Hidden gems from the patch notes:
* NPCs can now better distinguish between damage players apply to NPCs and damage that players apply to each other when picking targets.
* Contracts can now include Plastic Wraps. The volume of the Plastic Wraps is now displayed correctly as part of the total volume of the contract.
* It is now possible (again) to activate a Warp Disruption Field Generator directly after decloaking.

Anyone else find something surprising?
